Community School Model

King-Chavez Neighborhood of Schools is proud to serve our community through a Community School model. A Community School is a public TK-12 school that partners with organizations to provide integrated support services that empower the whole community, whole family, and whole child– cognitively, physically, behaviorally, socially and emotionally.

Through our Community School model, each King-Chavez school serves as a dynamic resource hub that provides integrated support and community connections based on the needs of the community we serve. Our Community School strategies include:

  • Value 1: Racially-just relationship-centered spaces, such as trust and relationship building opportunities through monthly Coffee with the Principal gatherings, team sports with AthLEAD Advantage, our Dual Language Program, and free expanded learning opportunities
  • Value 2: Shared power, such as our student-driven No Place for Hate model, parent seminars with Alma Community Care, and parent voice through surveys and parent committees
  • Value 3: Classroom-community connections, like our Mock Trial Program that partners with the La Raza Lawyers and San Diego Central Courthouse, field trips throughout the school year, and project-based learning with WIT
  • Value 4: A focus on continuous improvement, such as on-going professional development for teachers and support staff and student mindfulness practice with Niroga Institute

KCNS is proud to partner with over 50 organizations throughout the greater San Diego area to bring a wide variety of educational opportunities, enrichment, and support designed specifically to meet the needs of our school community. Connecting with community partners enables us to expand our resources and work collaboratively while supporting the whole community, whole family, and whole child.
